Instructions:  The application is designed for you to enter your answers in on the computer and then print out and email your finalized forms.

A hard copy of this form must be returned by April 7, 2023 to the Ridge View High School Office or Guidance Office in Holstein by 4 p.m.  An email attachment of this form must be sent to g-hscholarship@hotmail.com by 4 p.m. on April 7, 2023.  Once you have submitted, a duplicate copy will be made and may be distributed/emailed to other selection committees.

All of the information in this application is true and complete to the best of our knowledge.  Misinformation or falsification can lead to the revocation of any or all of the scholarships.  Points will be deducted for spelling error, improper formatting, and minor misinformation.  We realize this form must be completed and turned in by the date shown at the top, when it will become the property of the G-H Scholarship Fund.  We also realize there will be at least a 100 point deduction for failing to comply with the directives on this form.  We acknowledge the amount of the scholarship awarded will be determined by points received for the application, selection criteria, and the number of years I have been enrolled as a regular full-time student in the Galva-Holstein/Schaller-Crestland/Ridge View system.  We also accept that any scholarships received from the Fund will be paid upon enrollment as a full time student for the second semester and after meeting the payment guidelines.

Ž      American Trade Scholarship

Recipient will be entering a vocational college or 2 year program into a Building Trade; Carpentry,         Construction Management, Electrical, HV/AC(Heat Ventilation/Air Conditioning), Plumbing and Welding/Pipefitters.  The scholarship is $1000 and may be split, open to graduating Ridgeview Students with a 2.0 GPA. Pages 1-9 will be considered. On Page 7, include your future plans and interest in this technology field.

Ž  Doescher Family Scholarship                                                                  

Dale and Joyce Doescher farmed for fourteen years in Nebraska.  Purchase of a farm near Galva, Iowa was made in 1969 and the move was made in 1970.  Their two children are graduates of the former Galva High School.  Son Robert chose a career as an ag engineer designing farm machinery.  Daughter Linda became a cereal chemist working to improve or create new products within the food industry.  Their hope is to encourage area young people who wish to enter the field of agriculture. Recipient may choose a two year or a four year program in the general fields of agriculture.  Such fields may include but are not limited to:  agriculture, agronomy, ag business, ag engineering, animal science, food and nutrition, and grain science.  The scholarship is open to graduating seniors in the Ridge View School District, or future successor district.   Applicants who are FFA or 4H members should present a description of participation in any relevant activities and work experience on pages 4, 5 and 6.  All applicants should describe their future goals in the broad field of agriculture on pages 3 and 7.  Award:  $1,000 based on funds available. Pages 1-9 will be considered.  Recipient must have at least a 2.5 GPA after one semester of college.An alternate will also be selected.

 

Ž  Floyd and Eleanor Soseman Family Scholarship

Floyd and Eleanor Soseman were Grinnell College Graduates, raising four children in Holstein. They were proud of their liberal arts educations and were enthusiastic supporters of the school district, the community and the United Methodist Church.  Recipient is attending a four year liberal arts college and hopes to gain exposure to a wide range of academic subjects, including sciences as well as the traditional humanities subjects taught as liberal arts. Applicants should wish to broaden their understanding of other ideas, people and cultures different from their own through free inquiry and the open, non-judgmental exchange of ideas so they are prepared in life and work to use their knowledge and their abilities to serve the common good. Scholarship is $1000.  Scholarship is open to all Ridgeview graduating seniors.  Pages 1-9 will be considered.

 

 Ž  Galva-Holstein Education Association

Recipient is pursuing a career in the field of education.  The Galva-Holstein Education Association is a professional organization comprised of teachers employed by the school system.

The GHEA funds several educational or service oriented activities throughout the years with funds from member’s dues.  The scholarship amount depends on fund availability.  Applicants must provide character references from three people who can comment on your personal or academic qualities.  Pages 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 9 will be considered for this scholarship.  In the last question on page 3, also include information on how you have begun to prepare yourself for a teaching career.  When filling out page 9, keep the following question in mind:  In what ways have you demonstrated positive leadership qualities while attending Ridge View High School?

 Ž  G & C Scholarship

Recipient is entering a field of study in mechanics, diesel mechanics, or engine repair at a vocational college or 2 year program.  Applicants entering auto body or the field of auto repair will be considered.  Scholarship is $1000, which may be divided.  Pages 1-9 will be considered.  On page 5, be sure to note membership in related organizations or community organizations related to mechanics.  On page 7, also include information that explains how you plan to incorporate your experience in your future career goals.  Describe your interests in mechanics.

Ž  Joel Hickman Memorial Scholarship

Joel Hickman showed a passion for music and computers at an early age.  He played trombone in the band and jazz band, and sang in choir, and swing choir at Sentral High School, where he also served as drum major his senior year.  He later graduated from MusicTech in St. Paul, MN where he learned how to operate mixers and record separate tracks of music on 2" tape.  It was at MusicTech that he learned to play piano and bass guitar.  He was able to join his love for music and computers when he joined MidiRingtones, a company that programmed and sold ring tones and audio tones for cellphones.  During this time he and several friends were collaborating on a number of tracks of music that they hoped would become a marketable CD.  It would please Joel's family to help a Ridge View High School graduate pursue his/her education in computer technology, music, or both.  A $250 scholarship will be awarded to one student graduating from Ridge View HS planning to attend a college, university, or technical school.  The scholarship will be awarded at the end of the recipient's 1st semester of college.  Pages 1-3, 7 will be considered.  Applicants must have at least a 2.2 GPA through 7 semesters of high school.  Please include a recommendation from a music or technology teacher.

 

Ž  Stanley & Shirley Reiff Scholarship

Recipient is involved in community service, is of good character, and exhibits financial need.  Scholarship is $1000.  Pages 1-9 on application considered.  Special consideration will be given to pages 2, 5, 8, 9.

Harold and Ferne (Bruning) Scherner farmed almost 40 years. Prior to their marriage, Ferne received her teaching degree and taught for 3 years in Washta.  This memorial scholarship will be awarded in the amount of $1000 to a Ridgeview student pursuing a 2 or 4 year degree.  The recipient must exhibit financial need, have at least a 2.5 GPA and have a career interest in the fields of agriculture, education or both.   The scholarship recipient should also demonstrate strong discipline, good work ethics and respect for others. An alternate will also be selected.

 

**To be eligible for the following scholarships, the recipient must have a home address in the Galva Holstein School District and the recipient must be a graduate in May 2023 from Ridge View High School.

 Ž  Galva-Holstein Scholarship Fund

The Galva-Holstein Scholarship Fund is a community generated volunteer organization.  The Board organizes scholarships, events, and fundraisers to generate income to award to our deserving students.  Recipients must have participated in at least two (2) Galva-Holstein Scholarship Fund activities between 6/2022-5/2023.  Amount of scholarships depends on amount class of 2023 has raised, fund availability and success of community fundraisers.  All pages on application considered.  Extra points awarded for participation in G-H Scholarship Fund fundraising events.

 Ž  Holstein Kiwanis Scholarship

Recipient is pursuing a career in a field that will involve working with and assisting youth.  Recipient may attend a 2 year or 4 year college.  Criteria for selection include good character, community involvement, and must exhibit financial need.  Scholarship is $500.  An alternate will be selected.  Pages 1-9 will be considered for this scholarship.  Eligibility requires participating in the Kiwanis organizational portion of the wrestling tournament in 2016.  Preference will be given to wrestling tournament participation, however participants in the Hwy 20 cleanup in May will also be considered.

Ž  Ida County Chapter of Pheasants Forever

Recipient is entering a field of study in wildlife/fisheries/conservation.  Applicants entering agriculture or grounds keeping will be considered.  Scholarship is $1500, which may be divided.  Pages 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 will be considered.  On page 5, be sure to note membership in Pheasants Forever or other community organizations with a similar mission.  On page 7, also include information that explains how you plan to incorporate the principles of conservation in your future career plans.  Describe your interests in conservation and natural resources.

 

        Ž  Marie M. Jepsen Trust Scholarship

Recipient is attending a four year college.  Five scholarships will be awarded each year, and each will be equal to the net income of the trust divided by five.  Applicants must attach a copy of your financial aid letter that you received from the college you plan to attend or a letter from your local banker explaining your financial need.  Pages 1, 2, 3 and 4 will be considered for this application.  Applicant must attach an additional statement:  In fifty words or less tell why you think you deserve this scholarship.  Some of the criteria for selection will be level of responsibility, academic initiative, how you show courtesy, concern, and respect for others, and how you have followed the rules of the Galva-Holstein School District.

 

 Ž  Kenneth and Mary Radke Scholarship

The Radkes have farmed in the Galva-Holstein area for generations.  Ken farmed for 60 years.  Both Ken and Mary graduated from Galva High School.  They wish to encourage area young people to enter the field of agriculture.  Applicants entering the general field of agriculture or related agricultural studies will be considered.  The scholarship recipient must be a graduate of Galva-Holstein Schools.  Scholarship is $1,000 or based on funds available.  Recipient must have at least a 2.5 GPA after one semester of college.  Pages 1-9 of the application will be considered.

 

   Ž  Oscar and Marjorie Rice Memorial Scholarship

Oscar and Marjorie Rice were long-time supporters of students involved in Ida County 4-H, and Oscar was a 1936 graduate of Holstein High School.  The scholarship recipient must be a graduate of Galva-Holstein Schools.  Recipient must have been involved in Ida County 4-H for a minimum of five years.  Students will be paid during the 2nd semester of his/her freshman year of post-secondary education.  Scholarship is $1000.  Pages1-9 of the application will be considered.  An alternate will also be selected.

 

 Jerry Jochims graduated from Holstein High School in 1960.  He attended the University of South Dakota on a music scholarship and entered a pre-medical curriculum.  He then graduated from the University of Iowa in 1967, interned at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S. D., and served as a Flight Surgeon in the US Navy from 1968 to April 1971.  After specialty training at the University of Iowa in Orthopaedic Surgery he practiced that specialty in Burlington/West Burlington, Iowa for 39 years.

The goal of this award is to recognize a student interested in any field related to medicine.  This may include medicine (MD/DO, biomedical engineering, EMT/Paramedic, physician assistant, medical assistant, or similar), nursing, physical therapy, or veterinary science.  Minimum GPA must be 2.5.  The recipient shall have participated in at least 2 major extra-curricular activities for at least 6 semesters of their high school career.  Such activities may include instrumental music, choir, debate, participation in a major sport (including trainer/coaching assistant), school news staff/yearbook staff or similar.  The applicant must document efforts at volunteering for community betterment or other community service (ie. church activity).  Financial need will be considered.

An essay must be submitted outlining the career goals of this recipient as well as the merit of this applicant for such an award.

Award: $1000.  Attendance at an Iowa college, Iowa community college, or Iowa trade school is required.

 

*** To be eligible for the following scholarships, the recipient must have a home address in the Schaller- Crestland School District and must be a graduate in May 2023 from Ridge View High School.

Recipient is entering into vocational college or a 2 year program in any trade field. There will be two $500 scholarships with alternate selected.  This scholarship is for Schaller Crestland students. On page 7, please include future plans and goals in your prospective trade field.
